mahoganyOne of my fond memories of childhood is getting to open up my Christmas outfit on Christmas eve, and then getting all dolled up (as dolled up as a little kid can get), and heading out to Midnight Mass. It was an event, and I looked forward to it every year.
We've started a similar tradition with our kids. They get to open up their Christmas outfit, and their Christmas pajamas on Christmas eve. Well, usually they do, at any rate...
I haven't found any dress clothes for my kids this year. Of all the stores I've checked, I haven't found any. I'm not saying, that I haven't found some in my price range, or I haven't found some that I like. I simply haven't been successful in finding any...until today. So today, I did in fact find some, but they weren't to my taste. They were way over the top. Little tuxedos for the boys, and Pepto Bismol pink frou frou dresses, with an explosion of lace, organza and sequins all in the same outfit *shudder*. And then, there were the red and black ensembles.
Red and black in the same outfit for a female can be a tricky matter. Done well, it looks polished, luxurious, powerful, striking. Done poorly, it looks, well, hooker-ish. I would say that black lace over cheap red satin falls in the latter category. Why in heavens name are there dress clothes made of black lace over red satin for five year old girls??? There is no possible universe in which that look is okay on a child.
