One of my fond memories of childhood is getting to open up my Christmas outfit on Christmas eve, and then getting all dolled up (as dolled up as a little kid can get), and heading out to Midnight Mass. It was an event, and I looked forward to it every year.

We've started a similar tradition with our kids. They get to open up their Christmas outfit, and their Christmas pajamas on Christmas eve. Well, usually they do, at any rate...

I haven't found any dress clothes for my kids this year. Of all the stores I've checked, I haven't found any. I'm not saying, that I haven't found some in my price range, or I haven't found some that I like. I simply haven't been successful in finding any...until today. So today, I did in fact find some, but they weren't to my taste. They were way over the top. Little tuxedos for the boys, and Pepto Bismol pink frou frou dresses, with an explosion of lace, organza and sequins all in the same outfit *shudder*. And then, there were the red and black ensembles.

Red and black in the same outfit for a female can be a tricky matter. Done well, it looks polished, luxurious, powerful, striking. Done poorly, it looks, well, hooker-ish. I would say that black lace over cheap red satin falls in the latter category. Why in heavens name are there dress clothes made of black lace over red satin for five year old girls??? There is no possible universe in which that look is okay on a child.

My mom often buys Deanna a Christmas dress. But when I was growing up we never did anything like that.

I saw some beautiful dressy clothes on some children at the holiday party on Sunday. Maybe it has something to do with location? I can't imagine not being able to find nice clothes for the holidays.

I agree with you about black lace over cheap red satin.

They do have dress clothes for kids here. I see some dark red satin, which if I had a little girl I'd dress her in and then wear my wedding gown which was the same fabric. I suspect those are New Year's Eve clothes.

They do have a lot of velvet dresses though. The only department store I really go into is the military exchange, so it might be a very different demographic though.

When I was shopping for Tomas I found some dressy kids clothes on West 4th... nothing for 3 month olds, but lots for bigger kids!

Two questions:

Which stores?

Are the prices going to make me break out in hives?

Ok, so I don't know the name of the store, but I can give directions:

If you're walking from the Naam, towards Burrard on 4th, on the same side of the street as the Naam (I think that's the south side of the street), the first kids store you come to.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

I know that the littlest boy clothes they had were VERY expensive (at least to me), they were imported from france and cost over $100 for 1 outfit. But I didn't look at all the clothes...

have you tried second-hand shops or (a bit late now, but for next year) ebay?

I have the same problem finding dress clothes for the boys. I usually find things, but it takes forever. In my insane searching, though, it seems like there's always plenty of beautiful girls clothes. Well, for girls in comparable sizes to my boys ... when trying to find nice clothes for Thomas' sisters ... well, excuse the language but "whore" is the only word that comes to mind. I've stopped even trying to get them clothes, really. :(

Don't even get me started on clothes for adolescents. Yeah, I'm with you on the whole whoreishness of most of the outfits. Jason's niece is thirteen, so I always pick gift certificates from the most conservative, preppy store I can find :-)
