Arggh! My car has blown a head gasket. It'll cost about $1100 to fix it unless the cylinder head is cracked, in which case, it will cost about $1600 + taxes, of course.

I finally found an awesome mechanic about a year before I left BC. It took me five years to find him, so I'm not feeling overly optimistic that I'll find someone good out here :-(

If the car has overheated at any time in the last couple months, you might get the head replaned (which will cost a bit extra) but the problem might be that the overheating warped the head and that's why the gasket went. I've had this happen.
(I did the repair/replacement myself, although not the planing, but I can't recommend this as an easy job, by any stretch of the imagination.)
