mahoganyI chopped four inches off of my hair a couple of weeks ago. I’m gradually cutting all of the chemicals out, and I hope to have a half decent little ‘fro by Christmas.
For me, it’s not a politcal thing. It’s not one of those “sistas that relax their hair are full of self hatred, and need to get real” bullshit things. My problem is that I haven’t seen my natural hair in twenty-two years. And the notion that I can’t look good, and that I mustrelax my hair in order to be attractive, and in order to look professional is something that I find repugnant, and that I’m finally ready to rebel against, in my own tiny way. Who has been feeding me this garbage all my life, you ask? Why, mommy dearest of course.
The last time I wanted to go natural, I made the mistake of telling her, and after listening to her rant and rave about how I’ll look like a guy, and I’ll look like I belong in the ghetto, and how my hair should be my crowning glory and I’ll regret making myself look ugly, I lost my resolve. This time, I’m not saying anything. That being said, I do look pretty crappy with short hair, and somewhat like a guy, but it’s nothing that a bit of lipstick and some earrings can’t fix, right?
Who knows, I may relax my hair again in the future. I’m certainly not opposed to it, I just don’t want to be a slave to it, and goodness knows, my head could use a rest from having LYE put on it every eight weeks. Then again, I may not. We’ll have to see.
I’ll post some photos so you all can watch my transition.
