Feb. 12th, 2004 10:35 amMy mother never fails to leave me speechless. She called me up to tell me about something she had been watching on W-5 about vaccinations, and to suggest that I give my children the meningugate and chicken pox vaccines. The thing that baffles me is she knows how I feel about the subject. She knows full well that my children have been selectively vaccinated, and that I’ve delayed the shots. So, knowing all of this, why would she think that’d even consider vaccinating against chickenpox. She mentioned that having chicken pox increases the risk of children dying from flesh eating bacteria because one seven year old girl died from this. To which I said, “Well, do I need to start freaking out every time one of my kids has a scrape or a cut? I mean, that’s how Lucien Bouchard lost his leg...”
I also said that the story was unbalanced. If they really wanted to do a fair story, they need to show both sides. If they want to show parents what can happen if they don’t vaccinate, then they also need to show kids that have been harmed by vaccines. She got angry with me. Unbelievable. I think I kept my cool, quite nicely. I didn’t go off the deep end, and ask why the HELL she was calling with this. I just said that both sides need to be fairly presented. I think she must have been looking for an argument. Why else would she call me with that crap?
