I picked up the Count of Monte Cristo from the library a few days ago. Not because I had a burning desire to read it, but because it seemed to me that everyone in the world had read it except for me.

Wow! Has it ever sucked me in. Every day for the last four days, I've woken up bleary eyed because I've stayed awake reading too long.

It's exactly up my alley. Pure entertainment. As to whether it has any literary merit, I have no clue, but dang is it ever compelling.

Cut it out! I'm trying to stay away from fiction for at least a few months!

Heh, heh, heh. Well, then make sure this one tops your list when you allow yourself to return to fiction.

It's definitely a book that merits re-reading a few times. I can see myself enjoying it just as much the second time 'round.

Huh. I actually haven't read it. I've read "Les Trois Mosquetaires" over and over and finally got around to "Vingt Annees Plus Tard" aka "L'homme aux masque du fer". Did NOT like "Man in the Iron Mask". I was really mad at Dumas after reading it. However, "Count of Monte Cristo" is one I'm obviously going to have to pick up.

It's a marvellous book, but obviously its main theme (revenge) is decidedly unchristian.

Especially considering that Count is thoroughly convinced that it's God's justice and not his own that he is doling out.

Man, I wish my French were still at a level where I could actually enjoy books like this in their original language. I think stuff always gets lost in the translation - no matter how good that translation happens to be.

I admit that I read them in English. Dumas is hard enough to follow in my first language. I started to read "Trois Mosquetaires" in French but lost the copy somewhere.

I saw the abridged version on an episode of Wishbone. I'm sure I got the gist of it.

LOL! FWIW, I think it's worth reading if you ever have the inclination.

Oh I own it, and The Three Musketeers. I was just being silly. Nothing like a group of actors trying to buoy a Jack Russel Terrier through a tale of revenge.

The COUNT

Oh yes. I LOVE that book. Appeals to my sense of mean justice. It's a great story. I am so glad you are enjoying it.

Yeah, I couldn't help but root for the Count.

I haven't read it either, but your post about it is the most recent in an overwhelming string of references to the book. Which means I am going to have to give in and read it.

You won't be sorry. I wasn't expecting it to be this engrossing.
