David Sedaris is going to be reading some of his stuff at the Chan Centre here in Vancouver in November. He’s one of those authors that I’ve heard a ton about. People seem to love him, but I haven’t read a single word that he’s written. Should I go? Should I pick up one of his books? If so, which one?

Me Talk Pretty One Day is by a landslide the funniest book I've ever read. We listened to it in the car on a long trip and I was practically peeing my pants from laughing so hard. Definitely go. And pick up at least that book, if not his most recent one.

Yep, Me Talk Pretty. Holidays On Ice is also funny and sort of spooky. You can also find some of his spoken stuff on CD now and then, and hear him on NPR, and about once every two months the New Yorker has a funny essay by him (check back issues in the library?)
With all that said, I'm not overwhelmed by his in-person readings. They're sometimes fun but they're not as focussed as his writing.

Oooh, yes. If you want to hear him read a little, go to thislife.org and do a search in the archives for his name (I think that should work). You can hear episodes of (the totally awesome) This American Life for free streaming, and he contributes a lot.

I also love Me Talk Pretty One Day. Here's one of his shorter essays, but it sticks out in a lot of people's minds. Most of his work isn't this kind of toilet humor (literally), but this one... well, it's short. And funny.

Me Talk Pretty is my favourite. I enjoy his writing, but get burned out quite quickly with his other books. It's a pretty over the top style, which I can only take in small doses. But yes, his good stuff is some of the best laugh out loud material I've ever read.

Hello, found you through [livejournal.com profile] daisan :) I recommend Naked. It's a collection of memories from his childhood up through adulthood and showcases his fine humor.
