Reason 543 that the public school system is totally fucked up beyond repair.

I was having coffee with a new acquaintance of mine. Now, I don’t know her well enough to say for certain that she’s not prone to making shit up, but if her assertation that her son’s kindergarden teacher actually discouraged her from teaching him too much at home because kids that are too far ahead get bored and disruptive, has even a grain of truth to it, then that’s seriously messed up.

On a bit of a tangential note...

In Waldorf schools, the children are encouraged to work on a creative projects etc. for the first few years of their schooling, and don’t actually begin learning to read until around the age of seven, so their intellect isn’t woken too early, or some such thing. Now I’m all for waiting until a child shows readiness to pursue any kind of learning, but what’s the deal with being afraid of awakening the intellect too early? That just doesn’t make any sense to me.
